So when P and I got married 4.5 years ago, I became the 4th Johnston girl…that’s right, there were only 3 in the entire family before we got married! P’s mom (Patter), her sister-in-law (Lu) and her daughter (Trish) had started a tradition of getting together once a year for a long weekend when Trish was 3 years old. They made the rule that they had to go to a state that was on the ocean and stay on the beach. I couldn’t have joined at a better time…these are the states that are left:
- Rhode Island
My first JGW was in Rye Beach, NH and it was such a great time! Definitely not beach weather in October, but we made the most of it with shopping, movies and fun stories!
My second JGW was in New York City (we broke the rules for this one because it was the beginning of January and we didn’t want to go freeze our butts off on a beach in NY). It was my first time in the big apple and I was so excited! We were non-stop the entire time, but we saw and did so many things – it was such an amazing experience! Little did we know that the next JGW would have an additional girl tagging along…Sydney!
We went to New Orleans for our next trip and it was also Sydney’s first JGW! We rode the Trolley, visited the aquarium, ate some amazing food, and took a carriage ride! S was such a trooper and enjoyed every second of it! Little did we know that the next JGW would have ANOTHER girl tagging along…Parker!!!!
This year we broke all the rules! We hadn’t seen each other in over a year but there was no way I was flying with both the girls. Lu and Trish flew down to Charleston and we all rented a house on the beach in Edisto. It was the best beach house and it was literally ON the beach! We enjoyed our coffee (some mornings Mimosa’s) on the porch watching the dolphins play with the shrimp boats; it was such an amazing way to start the day! If you’re looking for a very laid back beach vacation then Edisto is definitely the way to go! Both the girls did really well, but I’m so ready to not have to share my bed with a sideways sleeping toddler tonight!!!!
Lu was awesome and made both the girls a Johnston Tartan frame when they were born, and she wrote them both notes that we’ve put in the back of the frames. I will leave you with her words that I think speak the truth about the women in this amazing family –
“you have joined a very special group. We are all strong, independent, compassionate women!”
