Let me start this out by saying that until I had children I WAS NOT A MORNING PERSON! Any of my friends from high-school, college and beyond will wholeheartedly agree with that statement.
It’s amazing what a little smiling baby will do for your morning (and let’s not forget about the coffee….lots of coffee). Ever since our littlest was born it’s been really hard to find time for “me” and my hubby will agree that I need “me” time. I’m not one of those moms that can just go day after day without an hour to myself, bless all of you who do that….you are stronger than I!
So when my girl Tarhole (it’s really Tarheel but we don’t like that word around here….and that’s not her real name….more on that later) mentioned this workout group to me that met at 5:15 in the MORNING…I laughed…like really laughed…there is NO way that you are getting this sleep loving chick up at 4:40am to go workout….that’s just funny! I let her brave it out on her own (such a good friend right!?) even though all she talked about was how awesome it was and how amazing the women are that are a part of it. Oh and did I mention that she was getting in shape? So I pondered, workout with one of my best friends, surrounded by amazing women, get some “me” time, get in shape….AND the work out is on the beach!
So I set my alarm for 4:40am….and I didn’t sleep at all the night before!
The workout was amazing, I immediately felt like a part of a group (which I’d been looking for in Charleston for 5 years), we prayed together and we got to witness this sunrise:
I left that morning knowing that I wanted to go back and I wasn’t even tired! If anything, I felt so energized!!!
So fast forward 9 months and I’m still going! I’ve never EVER stuck with a workout routine for that long. Now don’t get me wrong, there have been weeks that I haven’t made it at all (travel, sickness, life, too much alcohol…) but I miss it when I’m not going.
So what is the workout? Let me introduce you to FIA (click here for the more formal introduction) Females in Action. It’s a peer led workout that changes every day (we meet M/W/F). We do a mixture of cardio, weights, tabatas, you name it and we’ve probably attempted it. And y’all it’s FREE….yes it doesn’t cost you anything!!!! Tell me the last time that you got in shape with a great group of friends for free!?
Back to the Tarhole name thing…this is the other amazing part about the group, they care about your safety. Everyone that works out is given a nickname because they don’t want you to use your real name (think stalkers, crazy ex’s etc…) so after every workout we circle up and say our names. When it’s your first time you are an FNG (friendly new gal) until you get named….and you don’t get to pick out your name!!!! You say a little bit about yourself and then…tada….you’re given a name.
So what’s my name? Funny you should ask…it’s Mountie (I’m Canadian…get your head out of the gutter!)
Here is my personal testament for how my body has changed over the last nine months. I have definition in my arms and legs that I have never had before, my pre-baby jeans are actually loose on me, I’m able to run for 40 minutes without stopping (I’ve never run more than 8 mins before) and I can hold a plank for 2 minutes! Now to some that might not seem like a lot, but for me that it huge! I’ve never been the super strong girl before and I’m loving it now.
My heart and emotional well being are in such a great place because of this amazing group of women. They have introduced the bible back into my life, said prayers for my friends when requested, sincerely care about me and have become some of my closet friends!
Wow I just realized that this has been a really long winded post…sorry! I will leave you with this…
Yes, 4:40am is very early BUT it is life changing! Please check out the website to see if there is a group near you, and if there isn’t…start one!
You only get one body so take care of it! You have the choice to workout or not, some people don’t get that choice so take advantage of your abilities while you can!
If you live here in Charleston here is our workout schedule:
I would love to bring anyone that wants to try it out! I promise that you won’t regret it!
